Hanapepe Swinging Bridge
A BRAVE LITTLE DETOUR
Crossing the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge in Kauaʻi
FOOD & TRAVEL
By Teresa Davis | Travel & Lifestyle Explorer

The Hanapepe Swinging Bridge turned an unexpected stop into one of the memorable moments of my drive to Waimea Canyon.
Sometimes it's the little stops along the way that make a trip even more memorable.
While heading toward Waimea Canyon during my 2024 trip to Kauaʻi, I stopped in Hanapepe and came across the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge.
And, of course, once I saw it, I had a decision to make.
Was I actually going to walk across this thing?
Okay, I'm Going Across

Looking straight down the wooden walkway before crossing the bridge.
Standing at the entrance and looking all the way across, the bridge suddenly seemed a lot longer than it did from a distance.
It's narrow. It's wooden. And yes - it moves.
But I had come this far, so I decided I wasn't going to stand there and just take pictures of it.
I was going across.
And Yes, I Stopped in the Middle

Once I started walking, I quickly became very aware that I was on a swinging bridge.
But instead of rushing to get to the other side, I did something I wasn't sure I would be brave enough to do when I first stepped onto it.
I stopped right in the middle.
For a moment, I just stood there and looked around. Below me was the water. Around me were the green hills and tropical landscape. And behind and ahead of me was this narrow wooden bridge suspended across it all.
I was a little nervous - but I was also pretty proud of myself.
The View Was Worth It

The peaceful water and green landscape surrounding the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge.
Once I stopped concentrating on the bridge moving beneath my feet, I could actually appreciate the scenery around me.
The water was calm, the sky was bright blue, and everything around the bridge was green and peaceful.
Sometimes travel is about seeing a famous landmark. Other times, it's simply about doing something that pushes you a little outside your comfort zone. For me, this was one of those moments.
Proof That I Did It

Enjoying my Kauaʻi adventure after taking on the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge.
I'm glad I decided to cross.
It wasn't some huge dare or extreme adventure, but it was enough to make me hesitate for a minute - and that made getting to the other side feel even better.
And naturally, I needed a picture afterward.
Because if I'm going to be brave enough to walk across a swinging bridge, there needs to be photographic evidence.
Back on the Road

One last look at the peaceful landscape before continuing toward Waimea Canyon.
After my little bridge adventure, it was time to continue toward Waimea Canyon.
I originally thought of Hanapepe as simply a stop along the way. Instead, crossing the bridge became its own travel memory.
That's one of the things I enjoy about traveling. You can plan the major destinations, but sometimes the experiences you weren't expecting are the ones you end up talking about later.
And this one? Yes, I would cross it again.
