A DOUBLE CELEBRATION BY THE SEA
My Birthday Dinner at 53 By The Sea in Honolulu

Celebrating my birthday at 53 By The Sea in Honolulu.
Some restaurants are the kind of places you visit for dinner. Others are the kind of places you save for a celebration.
For me, 53 By The Sea was definitely the second.
During my 2024 trip to Hawaii, I visited the restaurant with my friend and her husband, and we actually had two reasons to celebrate. It was my birthday, and they were celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary.
From the moment we walked through the enormous wooden doors, I knew this wasn't going to feel like an ordinary dinner.
An Entrance That Makes an Impression
The grand staircase was one of the first things that caught my attention when we walked inside.
The entrance opened into this beautiful hallway with a grand staircase, decorative ironwork and a chandelier above. It had an elegant, almost Mediterranean feel, and the staircase immediately caught my attention.
We didn't have to dress in formal evening wear, which I appreciated. The atmosphere felt special without making the evening feel stiff.
We went to the left of the staircase, continued down a long hallway and eventually reached the dining area. There was additional dining on the other side, along with a bar. I didn't go upstairs, but the staircase and upper level added to the feeling that this was much more than an everyday restaurant.

Then there was the view. The dining room had floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the water toward Waikiki and Diamond Head.
There was indoor dining as well as patio seating outside, so the ocean became part of the experience.

Cocktails, Lobster and a Celebration Dinner

The 53 By The Sea menu and the tropical cocktail I enjoyed with a dried pineapple garnish.
I started with a tropical cocktail. I don't remember the exact name, but it had pineapple and a large dried pineapple garnish on top. It was really good and fit the setting perfectly.

For dinner, I had the lobster with vegetables. It was beautifully presented and delicious - exactly the kind of entree that made the meal feel worthy of a special occasion.
Two Reasons to Celebrate

A birthday for me and a 35th wedding anniversary for my friends - celebrated side by side.
Dessert made the double celebration even more personal.
My plate arrived with Happy Birthday! written in chocolate, while my friends' plate said Happy 35th Anniversary. Each dessert also had a small 53 By The Sea plaque on top.
It was a simple detail, but it made the evening feel even more special. We weren't just having dinner - the restaurant recognized exactly why we were there.
The Evening Didn't End at the Table

After dinner, we took pictures around the restaurant. We stopped again near that beautiful staircase, then went outside where the fountain was lit in blue.
There was also a garden terrace area that made another nice backdrop for photographs.
That is part of what I remember about 53 By The Sea. The experience wasn't limited to what was on the plate. The entrance, staircase, ocean views, celebration desserts and outdoor spaces all made the evening feel like an occasion.

Why I went: My birthday and my friends' 35th wedding anniversary.
What stood out first: The grand staircase and beautiful entrance.
My dinner: A tropical cocktail followed by a delicious lobster entree with vegetables.
Favorite personal touch: The Happy Birthday and Happy 35th Anniversary dessert plates.
Best part of the setting: The water views and the chance to take photos around the staircase and fountain.
Would I go back? Yes - for another special occasion.
For me, 53 By The Sea isn't the kind of restaurant I would choose for an ordinary weeknight dinner.
It's the kind of place I would save for a milestone - a birthday, anniversary, graduation, retirement or promotion.
It's a splurge, but sometimes a celebration deserves a place that feels like one.
